UK Expected to Face Snow, Icy Conditions

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom faces a fresh winter assault this weekend with widespread snow and ice threatening major disruptions, even as authorities scramble to restore services following the devastation left by Storm Goretti.

The Met Office, Britain's national weather service, has issued yellow-level alerts spanning extensive areas of Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland. These advisories warn residents to prepare for potential transportation breakdowns, electricity outages, and hazardous conditions that could result in slip-and-fall injuries.

Weather experts cautioned that ice poses a significant danger across multiple regions, with the potential to paralyze normal activities. Compounding concerns, the interaction between thawing snow and rainfall threatens to trigger flooding in vulnerable locations.

David Morgan, the flood duty manager at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, stated: "As temperatures rise following recent cold conditions, thaw of lying snow from Sunday onwards will increase the risk of flooding."

Storm Goretti wreaked havoc throughout Britain on Friday, plunging tens of thousands into darkness and crippling transportation networks across aviation, railway, and highway systems as meteorologists issued additional severe weather bulletins.

Approximately 57,000 residences remained without electrical service in the early hours of Friday, with the hardest-hit region being southwest England—particularly Cornwall, where roughly 43,400 properties lost power—alongside sections of the West Midlands, data from National Grid confirmed.
